NO FLIP FLOPS

Please know that the children are not supposed to be wearing flip flops for gym class or for recess.  In order to not waste time changing shoes, all my students are expected to put safe shoes on as one of their morning jobs.  They are not allowed to change back into other shoes until their play time after snack in the afternoon.  Learning time will not be used to fuss about shoes.  The children know this from last fall and also from wearing heels and boots this winter.

School is a fun and active place... especially for 5 - 7 year olds.  Please make sure they are wearing shoes that will encourage movement and learning.

Thank you!!!

Kindergarten 'Concert'

Today the two Kindergarten classes gave a 'concert' for the preschool class here at Discovery.  The 'concert' was held right in the music room.  It did give the Kindies a chance to experience performing for others while standing on the risers, playing instruments, and moving to the music.  Enjoy the videos!

EXPO NIGHT!

Expo Night at Discovery Elementary:  May 14th from 5:15 - 6:30

Expo Night is a year-end celebration of the wonderful learning and growing your child has done this year.  Each year has a different focus.  This year is The World's Fair!  K-5 we will be focusing on showing off the students' academic growth and learning!

Students will have a chance to decorate their room.  Each K-2 classroom has picked a different continent for decorating and learning projects.  Families will be given a family passport they can stamp as they travel from room to room and visit each continent!  There will also be a large map outside the Kindergarten area where families can put stickers on their country of origin if they like!

Grades 3-5 will be set up in the gym.

The evening is done in an Open House format.  Come when you can and stay as long as you like between the times of 5:15 and 6;30 on May 14th!!!

Lice Alert!

The problem of lice in a school never really goes away.  Lice has been found on students at Discovery again.  They are not in our room this time, but you never know.

Many parents of girls have their daughter wear their hair up every day of the school year for hygiene reasons.  That is not a bad idea.  Plus then the hair is out of the way for gym, playing, and learning.  Boys are not immune, either!

Please do check your children even if you have not had an incident with lice yet this year.  A pink sheet is coming home today in your child's Tuesday folder explaining how to look and what you are looking for.

Thank you!!

Morning Drop-offs

Please remember that children are not to be dropped off at school until after 8:30.  My class has had many students coming earlier and earlier to school.  There is no guaranteed supervision earlier than that.  Teachers are often in meetings.  Please be respectful of the quiet time the school needs to prepare a good day of learning for your child.

Thank you!!!

A Favorite Snack

We sure love apples!  This is the most popular thing we have for snack hands down!  Thank you for bringing them in all washed and ready to go!

Spring Field Trip! Save the Date!

Greetings, Families!

We are excited to travel to the Science Museum of Minnesota on Friday, Apr 24, 2015!  Each classroom will be able to bring 12 chaperones.

*Look for the permission slip along with chaperone sign up form when we return from Spring Break!

A few of the exhibits we will be viewing include:

*We Move and We Stay: This exhibit displays objects, old and new, which evoke a purpose and a story of the Dakota and Ojibwe people in a place now called Minnesota. Objects include both contemporary and traditional beadwork, dolls and a birch-bark canoe.

*Dinosaur and Fossil Gallery:  The Dinosaurs and Fossils Gallery amazes with world-class pre-historic dinosaur and fossil displays and interactive exhibits.

*Experimental Gallery:  The Experiment Gallery is all about hands-on experience, providing exhibits and activities that let you take on the role of a scientist to test and explore the worlds of physical science and mathematics.

We are excited to explore, ask questions, observe and experience science on this fun filled learning field trip!

Warmly,
The DES K-2 Teachers

Field Trip to Europe??

Today the K-2 classrooms are beginning a study of our seven continents:  North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and Antarctica.  Your child will spend one half hour on each 'continent' with a different teacher.  They will learn about some of the people, customs, and geography of that continent.

Your child has a passport that will be stamped every time they visit a new continent.

Today your children go to Europe in Ms. Grams' classroom!
