Formal Day

I goofed and didn't realize that it was Wear your Formal day!  We have 4 or 5 students dress up, and the rest of us made the most of it by making our own fancy stuff to wear.  Everyone was very happy with the end result.  They even dressed me up!

Turning an attitude around!

KEEP ON CHECKIN.........

In your child's mail today is an important notice about head lice.  It talks about what to do if you find you have a case in your household.  It is on gold colored paper.

Please try not to be embarrassed if you find you have a case .  Many of us have.  I have had it and my children had it many times during elementary school.

I have attached a link to a You tube video that shows what nits and lice look like in the hair.  I think it is very helpful if you are not sure what to look for!

What lice/nits look like in the hair.

I am sure there are videos for treatment.  You can also hire professionals to take care of the situation if you look online.

Thank you for your continues upkeep and care!

Literacy

Getting Kids to Read, Write, Listen and Speak Productively Every Day!

What does a teacher do when she forgets to write a morning message to the children?  Why, she turns it into a learning opportunity of course!

Here is a morning message written by some students in our class.  How much of it can you read?

To a Kindy teacher like me this is priceless!  These are all the things I can see:

* a heading/greeting
* a message with meaning
* a question
* a graph to organize answers
* heart words spelled correctly
* other words sounded out including beginning, ending, AND middle sounds!!!
* correct use of many vowel choices

There are lots of things I don't see, but considering the developmental age of these children this message rocks!!!!!

p.s.  What it says:

Good Morning

Today is going to be a good day.
Put a tally mark if you go down to breakfast, Yes / No

Read to Self

Each day, almost from day one of school, we have been practicing a skill called Read to Self.  Read to Self builds stamina for sitting quietly in one spot and looking at or reading books.  At the beginning of the year our goal is 3 minutes.  Once they reach that goal, we raise it bit by bit.  The end goal for Kindergarten is 20 minutes.  This class can get to 20 minutes about half of the days.  They can reach 15 minutes pretty much every day!  Read to Self stops when someone talks, moves from their spot, or quits reading.

Here is a video showing our Read to Self time today.  It always amazes me when we get to this point.  Your child is growing up!!!!

Afternoon Play Time Video

Our afternoons can be long, especially for five and six year olds.  We take a 10-15 minute play break in the afternoon after snack so children have a chance to be up and moving and to practice many important skills.  These are not just social skills.  Many are academic as well.

Enjoy this video of your children taking their "Play Break."

Homework Help!

Your children have started bringing home books for homework.  In a plastic envelope you should have seen a letter to you, a book, and a slip that you should sign and return with the book after they are done practicing.

Many of the plastic folders came back empty.  Please help your child locate any missing papers or books that need to be returned to school.

The books are small and square.  They are usually about 8 pages long.

The paper that travels back and forth looks like this:

Contribute

A student in our class shared yesterday.  She went from having long dark brown hair to a short bob!  Now, a haircut may not seem like it is worthy of sharing, but in this case it was.

This student donated her hair to a group that makes wigs for people with cancer.  She was able to explain all about it to the class.  She also shared her plan to grow it out and donate it again!

What a great example of contributing to the community.  And now others may want to make a donation as well!

(When I asked her how she liked her new style, she said, "I Love It!")

Sometimes Lost is Better

Today I came to school and wanted to get out a fresh set of toys for the children to play with in the morning and during their afternoon break.  One of the tubs was filled with cars, construction equipment and play people.  We have two rugs that have roads and city scenes on it, but they have gone missing.

So, I grabbed a piece of cardboard and let the children make a scene of their own!  I helped with the roads.  The rest was up to them.  There is a park, school, lake, church, and more!  This is way better than unrolling a silly ol' rug!
